In 1989 the French National Geographical Institute pronounced this position – latitude 54° 54ˈ, longitude 25° 19ˈ – to be the geographical centre of Europe. It’s marked with a boulder inscribed with the points of the compass and the words ‘Geografinis Europos Centras’. There’s also 27 different EU flags, a wooden decking stage and a white granite obelisk with a crown of gold stars.
